It has come to our attention that due to a manufacturing fault, the lamp stand and associated switch (http://goo.gl/36Y6Q5) included in the educational kit are unsafe. In certain circumstances their use could result in an electric shock.

We recommend that you immediately discontinue use of the lamp stand and bulb. Cut the cord (after disconnecting it from the power supply!) and discard lamp stand.

The device should be replaced by a battery powered lamp for all relevant exercises and demonstrations. (example: http://goo.gl/WUTc5f ). Such a lamp can be purchased locally in most countries for much less than the cost of distributing it. If you have any difficulty in acquiring this lamp, please contact us and we will send you a battery powered replacement. Note that due to logistics it may take a few months before an alternative reaches you. We advise you not to use the lamp stand in the meantime.

We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause. However, ensuring the safety of children and teachers is of paramount importance to all of us in the Universe Awareness Team. If you have sent or shared Universe in a Box with other educators then please share this information with them to ensure that other people using your kits also don't use the lamp stand and bulb.
