UNAWE’s first short children's film, “De Dromenkijker“ (The Dreamgazer), is now available to watch on vimeo! The Dutch film (with English subtitles) tells the story of seven children who go on a camping trip that turns into the stargazing adventure of a lifetime.
The seven children featured in the film were also heavily involved in the production; during the process they were given the opportunity to have an equal say in all the important aspects of film-making and storytelling. The 5-week project saw the children actively discuss and shape a story about astronomy. Together with the director, Remco van Schadewijk, they decided on the final storyline, activities, locations, sounds and aesthetics of the short film. They agreed that the film should be exciting and include ‘fun learning’, so that they could inspire other children with the wonders of the universe. They then acted in the film, together with voluntary amateur astronomer, Petra van der Meijs. A professional film crew shot the film in one day in late June 2013.
The film première was held at the festival Nacht van Kunst en Kennis (A Night of Art and Knowledge) in Leiden, the Netherlands last week, where it received a very warm reception from an audience of around hundred adults and children. According to viewers, the film included “stunning imagery and a rich, inspiring story”.
Synopsis
During an astronomy camping trip, children are telling stories around a campfire while they wait for nightfall so that they can go stargazing. When the sun has set and darkness envelopes the world around them, they gaze at the stars in a clearing of the woods, together with an amateur astronomer. The telescope brings the stars closer, but not close enough for them. They would rather be among the stars. As the night progresses, they start to find out this may actually be possible…
