GalileoMobile, a travelling science education project supported by Universe Awareness (UNAWE), has recently completed a number of expeditions bringing astronomy closer to young people in various parts of the world; Bolivia, Nepal and India. The project mainly targets regions that have little or no access to outreach programs, where it organises astronomy-related activities in schools and villages, to encourage a thirst for knowledge in young people using the exciting wonders of the cosmos.
From June 12 to 18 2012, GalileoMobile travelled to the remote amazonic region of Pando, one of the most isolated areas in the country and difficult to access using any form of transport. During the 6-day expedition 4 rural and 2 city high schools where reached through a number of interactive activities about astronomy with the students, and telescope sessions with the teachers.
After that the project stopped in India between 2 and 13 of July 2012, in the state of Karnataka where many places where access to Astronomy is limited or even non-existent. Around 1400 students, 100 teachers and 2100 local people in 12 villages and towns were exposed to modern Astronomy over the fortnight, through a number of activities. This expedition placed heavy focus on involving local teachers in the astronomical activities, in order to create a lasting impact that will go beyond GalileoMobile's short time in India; and a teacher training program was initiated in collaboration with the Galileo Teacher Training Programme, to provided the necessary skills to work with local teachers.
But the work isn't over! September this year saw the project begin an expedition to Uganda, during which five school visits are planned where teachers will participate in training workshops.
