Who Says There's No Sound in Space?
30 May 2013

On the 21 May the first audio Space Scoop episode, “Orion and the Cool Universe” was released as part of 365 Days of Astronomy, a project that has published one podcast per day, for all 365 days of 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 — and now it's on to 2013! The podcast was originally produced as part of the International Year of Astronomy in 2009, and the episodes are written, recorded and produced by a variety of astronomical minds from around the world.

“Orion and the Cool Universe” was narrated by Pamela Gay, an astronomer, educator, science writer and podcaster, and co-host of Astronomy Cast, a series of astronomy podcasts that takes questions from astronomy lovers direct to astronomers. Gay was enticed by UNAWE's goal to inspire every child with our wonderful cosmos, and she added that: "One nice side effect of inspiring the kids, is often you can awe the adults as well."

So far this year the The 365 Days of Astronomy Podcast has covered the International Space Station, the Oort Cloud, how to colonize the galaxy and many, many more exciting astronomical topics – and even better: they'll keep coming, once a day, throughout the entire year!

The Space Scoop episode included a full reading of “The Universe is a Cool Place” about a very cold section of the Orion Nebula that was photographed by ESO's infrared and radio telescope, the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment. The 10-minute episode also told a story from Greek mythology called “Orion the Giant”, that tells the tale of how the constellation of Orion came to shine in our night sky.

365 Days of Astronomy Project Manager, Avivah Yamani tells us: "Starting in 2013, we enhanced our podcast series to reach children too, as we want to inspire children with the beauty of the universe and encourage them to do science. We choose space scoop as one of our podcast series because it is easy to understand by children and adults as well".

You can listen to each podcast episode directly on the 365 Days of Astronomy Podcast website or they are available through an RSS feed.
