In partnership with Astronomers Without Borders, Discover the COSMOS is challenging all teachers and students around the world to design their own educational activities to promote the introduction of scientific methods in the classroom. Get involved and you can be the winner of an all-expenses-paid trip to Volos, Greece to join the Discover the COSMOS Summer School from 2-4 August 2013.
The competition is designed to encourage teachers, trainers, scientists and students to work together to promoting the exploration of online scientific resources in the classroom, such as e-Science tools, resources and e-Infrastructures. The educational activities must be designed using images provided by Astronomical Observatory of Coimbra, National Schools Observatory and Faulkes Telescope Project, which were made public throughout April and are now available online. The winning activity will be picked based on the clarity of instructions, the completeness of information and the methodology for use in classroom.
The 3-day long conference is a join endeavour between Discover the COSMOS and the Global Hands on Universe Network (GHOU) and will focus on topics “designing the science classroom of the future” to “communicating science via online applications and tools,” among others, with discussions, talks and workshops about scientific simulations in education, remote and virtual labs for inquiry learning, developing effective collaborations between schools and research centres and much more. Check the full list of conference themes here. All astronomers and astrophysicists are also invited to submit abstracts of oral and poster presentations to GHOU Conference 2013 by 20 May 2013, send them via email to Angelos Lazoudis: angelos@ea.gr or Rosa Doran: rosa.doran@nuclio.pt.
The winner will attend the conference alongside educators, scientists, outreach groups and education policy makers, and travel, lodging, meals and course fees will all be paid, and the conference will be followed by General Assembly of Global Hands-On Universe on 5 August, where members will implement the strategic plan for next two years.
So, why not take part? Register before 15 May 2013, and when your learning activity has been uploaded send an email with the link to rosa.doran@nuclio.pt, then sit back, relax and wait to find out if you're the winner!
