Universe Awareness joins Education for All Initiative
28 September 2012

Universe Awareness (UNAWE) has become a member of the international Education for All initiative, a movement aiming to ensure a quality education for every child, youth and adult around the world.

Over 60 million children around the world are currently being denied education with millions more receiving just the minimum. Education for All, led by the United Nations Special Envoy on Global Education, Gordon Brown, plans to change this by ensuring a place in school for every child in every country by 2015.

Providing basic education around the world is the most important step to fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals by 2015. These goals were agreed by all 193 United Nations member states as a strategy for developing a poverty-free world with a healthy population and equal rights. Education for All will tackle at least one of the goals directly. Indirectly good education provides the key to overcoming generations of poverty and unlocking national prosperity.

In 2000 at the World Education Forum 164 governments pledged to ensure education for all by 2015. These national governments have since been joined by a wide range of partners from international organisations like UNAWE to regional aid agencies and civil societies.

Around 4 million classrooms and an additional 1.8 million trained teachers are needed worldwide to help reduce both class sizes and the number of children without a teacher. The educational resources and teacher training provided by UNAWE will contribute to reaching these goals.

There are plans to create a global network that would allow teachers and parents to share knowledge and resources, this means providing access to modern technology and internet to teachers and students in the poorest countries and most remote regions.

According to Education for All's statement of aims, almost half of the world's out-of-school children live in conflicted zones. In these areas education is considered low-priority. An Education without Borders initiative is needed to do for education what organisations such as the Red Cross do for health.

As part of the Education for All movement, Universe Awareness will be helping to make these ideas reality. To find out more about the campaign and see how you can help, visit the Education for All website or find out more at the UNESCO Education for All page.
